My “Out of Hand” series explores queer agency through large-scale drawings of hands. Gestures and jewelry replace traditional full-body poses and props, injecting personality into what ultimately becomes a faceless portrait. Each hand in the series belongs to a queer woman or gender expansive person. The models select a bracelet featuring a word related to their sexual and/or gender identities, then we work together to find a gesture to complement it.
Sluts, cunts, fruity women, and femme daddies – all are welcome in my work. The rich, tactile charcoal and carbon pencil marks that make up their flesh are in direct tension with the vibrant, smooth beads of the bracelets rendered in colored pencil, touching on the complex, multifaceted nature of queer identities. Magnified and tightly cropped, these brazen, fleshy drawings are self-assured and undeniable – just like the people they depict.
