Event Horizons

My “Event Horizon” series depicts the historic first photo of a black hole. This “unseeable” image, captured in 2019, was rendered using an algorithm created by Dr. Katie Bouman. The shape visible in the image is called the event horizon, referencing the impossibility of seeing any event taking place past that threshold. The event horizon is the ultimate point of no return.

I explore the form and color of the event horizon using watercolors and acrylic paint. I apply a lens of gentle abstraction, striving to capture the essence of this cosmic phenomenon. Then, working carefully not to overload the paper or muddy the palette, I layer paint to produce richly developed colors. The resulting compositions flow in gentle eddies, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere. These paintings consider the vastness of the universe and its relationship to the human condition.

In the winter of 2020, I began to study the Event Horizon image through printmaking. By combining the flexibility of plexiglass printing with the rigidity of screen printing, this series contemplates the delicate balance between order and chaos.

Original Monotype Prints

My process for these pieces combines loose and painterly base prints with a structured screen print. The resulting tension reflects on the balance between order and chaos in our universe.

All monotypes are one-of-a-kind, $50 each.
